Car key and fob replacement in DC

Most car keys now carry a chip that has to be paired to the car, so a replacement means cutting and programming. Kelley Blue Book puts a transponder key at $125 to $250 and a push-to-start key at $200 to $400.

Which key you have

  • Plain metal key: older cars. Cut it and go.
  • Transponder key: a chip in the head that the car has to recognize.
  • Flip key or remote head: a chip key plus lock buttons.
  • Smart key: push-button start, stays in your pocket.

Kelley Blue Book says a locksmith often comes in 10% to 25% under the dealer, and a mobile locksmith comes to the car, which saves a tow when you have no working key at all. Some models still need the dealer. Give the exact model and year when you call and the locksmith can tell you which side of that line you are on.

Erase the lost key

When a key is lost, not just misplaced, ask for it to be removed from the car's memory while the new one is programmed. That way the old key can't start the car if someone finds it. In DC this is worth the extra minute: MPD recorded 3,935 vehicle thefts in 2025, and 6,789 in 2023. What the theft numbers show.

What to bring

Your ID and the registration or title. A careful locksmith won't make a key for a car without proof it is yours. The VIN is printed on the registration and on the dashboard near the windshield.

Questions people in DC ask

Can a locksmith make a key without the original?

For most cars, yes. They cut it from the key code and program it at the car. A few newer or luxury models can only be done by the dealer.

How many keys should I have?

Two. Making a spare while you still have one working key usually costs much less than starting from zero.
