Locked out right now?

Call or text, then work through this while you wait.

  1. Someone inside who needs help? A child alone, a pet in a hot car, a person who is ill: call 911 first. That is a police and fire job.
  2. Try the building first. In an apartment, the front desk, the concierge or the management emergency line may have a key. Half of DC homes are in buildings of 10 or more units.
  3. Ask two things on the phone. The business's legal name and one total with the trip in it. Keep your ID handy for when they arrive.

Renting? Who to call first. Keys in the car? Your insurer or roadside plan may cover it. Car lockout options.

How it works

One request, one DC locksmith business

  1. Describe the lock and where it is. Any way you reach us works. Start with the ZIP and the floor; then say what kind of lock it is, or which car.
  2. One District locksmith business rings back. It names itself and quotes one figure that already counts the drive across town.
  3. The decision stays with you. Should the figure on your stoop beat the figure on the call, turn the work down.

Numbers to test a quote against

What locksmith jobs usually cost

These ranges are national, from published price surveys. They are not quotes and not a DC average. The business that takes your job should give you a single total before it starts.

On a lockout, the drive is part of the price. A phone quote of $19 or $29 is usually only the call-out fee, so ask what the whole job comes to with labor. Why that matters.

What most locksmith ads skip

DC doesn't license locksmiths. Here is what you can check.

The District has no locksmith license and no board that tests locksmiths. Maryland and Virginia both have one. So an ad that says "licensed" in DC may be pointing at a Maryland or Virginia card, or at nothing. The phone call is your screen, so use it.

  • Ask for the business's legal name, then look it up on DC's SCOUT license search.
  • If it also works in Maryland or Virginia, ask for that state's locksmith license number.
  • Get the full price on the phone, not only a call-out fee.
  • Expect to show ID, and ask to see theirs.
  • Get a written, itemized invoice with the business name on it.

Questions people in DC ask

How much does a locksmith cost in DC?

Nobody publishes a DC price list, so national surveys are the honest yardstick. Fixr puts the average locksmith job at about $150, with most between $100 and $200 (January 2025). By Fixr's figures a house lockout runs $50 to $175, a car lockout $80 to $150 and a rekey $70 to $160 for the job. In the District, building access and the hour can both push the total up, so ask for one number that includes travel before anyone sets out.

What is the average call out fee for a locksmith?

Fixr puts a locksmith's trip fee at $25 to $100 and a full service call at $100 to $200; Thumbtack's service-call range is $30 to $150. A trip fee pays for the drive to your block and nothing at the lock itself, so when a quote over the phone sounds suspiciously small, ask for the figure once labor is added.

How long does a locksmith take to get here?

It depends on where the locksmith is when you call and on DC traffic, which can make a few miles slow at rush hour or around events downtown. When they quote, ask roughly when they expect to reach you as well. A standard lockout is usually quick once they are at the door; a car key that has to be cut and programmed takes longer.

Are locksmiths licensed in DC?

No. The District has no locksmith license and no locksmith board. A locksmith business in DC needs the same Basic Business License from the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection that most DC businesses need (the General Business category), and you can look that up on DC's SCOUT license search. Across the line it is different: Maryland licenses locksmith businesses and registers each locksmith who works for one, and Virginia regulates locksmiths through its Department of Criminal Justice Services. So a locksmith who also works in the Maryland or Virginia suburbs should be able to show that state's license.

What proof do I need for a locksmith?

Expect to show that you live there or own the car before a careful locksmith opens it or cuts a key. At a home that means a photo ID showing the address; after a recent move, a lease in your name fills the gap. At a car it means the registration plus your ID. When all of it sits on the far side of the locked door, mention that on the callback; many locksmiths open up first and check the papers inside before leaving.
